This intimate, music-style-documentary dives into the world of UK-based producer, beat-maker, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Ed Leigh, as he shares insights on the creation of his three-part debut album, Millennial Falcon.
Commissioned by Majestic, I was brought on board to collaborate with Ed during the final stages of the album’s production. The concept was to spend a few days with him and his family in Preston, capturing moments from his daily life and weaving them together with webcam-style narration, archival footage, and personal photographs. The resulting material would serve both the music videos and a companion documentary piece.
Behind the Scenes
We shot on a combination of digital and Super 8mm film, embracing a hybrid aesthetic that mirrored the lo-fi, analogue texture of Ed’s music. My initial intention was to lean more heavily on Super 8mm, but due to low-light conditions and the volume of footage required, we struck a practical balance between the two formats. The Super 8mm brought warmth, imperfection, and nostalgic texture; the Sony FS7 II with the Fujinon Cabrio Zoom gave us control and clarity in key scenes.
The production was loose and responsive—essentially a "day-in-the-life" documentary with the creative freedom of a music video. We captured candid, unguarded moments with Ed and his family, juxtaposed with stylised sequences and observational footage. Ed’s voiceover, recorded in a casual, webcam-style format, provided the narrative thread that tied everything together.
The result is a warm, lo-fi portrait—something between a home movie and a visual mixtape—that reflects both the intimacy of Ed’s process and the character of his music. Loosely structured, visually textured, and emotionally grounded, the film offers a wabi-sabi glimpse into the life of a modern musician navigating personal expression and family life in equal measure.
